Which is more beautiful – the flower or the butterfly?

It’s a tough call, yet artist and designer Raku Inoue isn’t making us choose, as his delicate flower sculptures portray anything from butterflies to dragonflies, handmade using real flower petals.

In a bright photo series entitled ‘Natura Insects’, the artist pulls inspiration from nature not only for the image subject, but also for its production. And the result is an intricate and touching ode to the garden.

Contrasting colours, textures, and shapes make up the simple yet somehow energised flower sculptures. There is almost an indication of movement, as it seems the butterflies could leap out and flutter out of the page, the grasshopper jump out of your screen, and ladybird get up and wave hello.

Take a look through Raku’s flower sculptures below. You’ll never look at your garden insects the same way again.
